The Research Sector Registers a New Patent in the Field of Nanofluids

The Patents and Intellectual Property Rights Office at Kuwait University's Research Sector announced a new registered patent in the field of nanofluid technology.

On this occasion, the Patents Office, represented by Prof. Othman Al-Khudher, Acting Vice President for Research, honored the inventors Dr. Ammar Bahman, Mechanical Engineering Department, Faculty of Engineering and Petroleum at Kuwait University, and Dr. Naser Al-Sayegh, Co-I from Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research, congratulating them on their new patent and immense contribution in bolstering the scientific and technology field in Kuwait. He further reiterated KU's full support for research and innovation by providing necessary facilitation to transform creative ideas into real applications that serve our community and boost its scientific development.

Dr. Haneen Al-Ghabra, Assistant Vice President for External Research Collaboration and Consultations, stated that this patent is obtained after applying the Fast Track service, taking merely five months to be investigated by the examiner, a process used to take up to three years. The number of registered patents increased significantly after the implementing this service which will be reflected in the international ranking of Kuwait University.

Meanwhile, Dr. Nawaf Faisal Al-Juwaihel said that nanofluid technology has recently emerged as an innovative solution to remarkably improve the efficiency of thermal systems, especially those used in water desalination and electricity generation. The technology replaces traditional fluids with nanofluids that have fine solid particles, which enhances the efficiency of heat transfer by 20-70 %. The invention consists of a device capable of characterizing the state of nanosuspensions in nanofluids during their flow in thermal systems and will contribute significantly to the development of systems currently in place and planned to be built in Kuwait in the future like power generation and water desalination plants. This device is considered the most accurate in describing the physical state of nanosuspensions during flow. It also allows understanding their physical and thermal properties and achieving the sustainability of these fluids. The device is further beneficial in improving the performance of power generation and water desalination plants while minimizing operational costs and fuel consumption.
