The Research Sector organized a workshop titled "Transforming Scientific Publishing: The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Advancing Research, Writing and Publishing" on Wednesday, October 7, 2026. The workshop was delivered by Dr. Fawaz Al-Azmi, Department of Computer Science, College of Science, and attended by several KU researchers.
The workshop addressed the practical use of AI in research and publishing. Dr. Al-Azmi introduced participants to the new Gemini Enterprise platform at KU and presented applications using NotebookLM and Elicit for organizing sources, reviewing literature, summarizing studies, identifying research gaps, and extracting data.
He further demonstrated ways to employ these tools in developing ideas, improving academic writing, and preparing manuscripts, abstracts, and cover letters, as well as selecting suitable journals and responding to reviewers' comments. Participants also received hands-on training on crafting effective prompts, verifying the accuracy of outputs and references, and building simplified AI agents to carry out specific research tasks.
The workshop aimed to boost productivity, writing quality and publication readiness, while upholding academic integrity and the responsible use of AI.
At the end of the session, Dr. Mabkhoot Al-Dosari, Assistant Vice President for Research External Collaboration and Consultation, honored Dr. Al-Azmi in appreciation of his efforts.
