Within the framework of the Research Sector's continuous efforts to promote scientific research, the Office of External Research Collaboration and Consultation at the RS organized a workshop in collaboration with the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS) titled: "Bridging Humanities and STEM: A Quantitative Approach Using R". The workshop was presented by Prof. Stephen Grace - University of California- Santa Barbara, and Dr. Mohammed Al-Enzi, Assistant Professor of Applied Text Linguistics at Kuwait University, College of Arts. The 4-day workshop held from April 13th – 17th, 2025 at the College of Business Administration in Sabah Al-Salem University City is a part of the ongoing KU-KFAS MOU.
Speaking on the workshop, Dr. Mohammed Al-Enzi stressed the importance of quantitative transformation in humanities and the current need for precise tools and scientific methodologies that go beyond subjective interpretations and are based on measurable data. He added that unlike personal impressions, numbers are characterized by accuracy and impartiality enabling researchers to reach more robust and solid conclusions. Therefore, Prof. Stephen Grace, a leading figure in quantitative linguistics, was invited to highlight ways in which the gap between the humanities and STEM can be bridged, promoting the use of statistics and quantitative analysis in research fields of language, literature, history, philosophy, and other humanities disciplines using the R programming language.
Dr. Al-Enzi then thanked the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences for sponsoring the workshop. He also thanked Prof. Dina Al-Mailem, Kuwait University President, and the Research Sector, represented by Prof. Noriah Al-Kandari, for providing logistical support for the workshop.
For her part, Prof. Noriah Al-Kandari, Acting Assistant Vice President for External Research Collaboration and Consultations, said that the workshop witnessed a wide participation of approximately 40 researchers. She added that the workshop brought together researchers from various state research institutions, including KU's academic staff and graduate students, the Public Authority for Applied Education and Training PAAET, and Dasman Diabetes Institute. In conclusion, Prof. Al-Kandari thanked the lecturers for their efforts in presenting the workshop, and KFAS for their generous sponsorship.
